At the 1999 fall meeting of the Canadian Council of Ministers of Environment (CCME), Joan Sawicki, British Columbia’s environment minister convinced her colleagues that solid waste management requires national action. The CCME had no provision to deal with solid waste in the business plan, but Ms. Sawicki called for action to reduce wasteful consumer packaging — especially plastic — which remains a burden to the environment and to local taxpayers. Ms. Sawicki’s call was supported by other provinces and a decision was made to form a working group to look at possible additional measures to reduce this waste. The group will consist of environment ministry staff from several provinces, led by B.C. It will bring back recommendations to the next ministers’ meeting in May. One item the group will explore is recycled content in plastic containers.
