Environmental Defense has announced the release of its new and improved web-based Paper Calculator, a web-based tool that enables companies, communities, schools, NGOs and other organizations to understand and improve their daily paper use.
The Paper Calculator provides users with the average energy and wood consumption and environmental releases of different paper types across their full lifecycle. For each of thirteen major grades of paper and paperboard, it allows the user to compare the environmental impacts of papers made with different levels of recycled content, and to see how using less paper or changing other specifications can reduce environmental impacts. Finally, the Paper Calculator helps users to measure and communicate the environmental benefits of better paper choices.
Paper-making is a resource intensive process, and paper use is growing. For instance, in the United States office paper use now stands at over five million tons per year. This requires more than 17.3 million tons of wood and generates nearly 11.4 million tons of solid waste.
“Using less paper and switching to recycled paper conserves wood, water and energy, and helps reduce pollution and waste,” explains Environmental Defense project manager Tom Murray. “The new Paper Calculator shows these benefits in a clear and comprehensive format.”
“The Paper Calculator is a valuable resource for Staples and our customers who are interested in understanding the environmental impacts of their paper purchasing decisions, says Mark Buckley, VP environmental affairs for Staples, Inc. “The updated Paper Calculator will help Staples measure our continued progress in reducing pollution and natural resource use through our efforts to increase the post-consumer recycled content in the products we sell.”
“With the help of Environmental Defense we switched our catalogs to paper containing at least 10 percent post-consumer recycled content,” says Derek Smith, director of corporate responsibility for Norm Thompson Outfitters.
With its improved user interface, advanced analytical features, and enhanced data outputs, the new Paper Calculator provides a wide range of paper purchasers with an easy-to-use tool to quantify the environmental benefits of better paper choices.
