The Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) recently announced that the Regional Municipality of Niagara’s Enviro-Centre Project has been named the “Public Works Project of the Year” in the Structures Over $10 Million category. The award was established to promote excellence in the management agencies, the consultant/architect/engineer, and contractors who work together to complete public works projects.

The Enviro-Centre Project evolved from a need to enhance Niagara Region’s recycling program by adopting a two-stream collection/recovery program. By siting and developing a new recycling facility on a former brownfield site, this project is a leading example of Smart Growth principles in practice in Niagara Region. The Enviro-Centre began receiving materials from across the region in July 2004.

The OPWA awards ceremony was on Thursday, January 27th, 2005 in Mississauga, Ontario.
