EIC at international conference
On November 2, 2001, SWR Editor-in-Chief Guy Crittenden participated in an international environmental journalist conference in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, hosted by the University of the West Indies and Sandals Resorts. Keynote speaker Dr. Arthur Hanson, a senior scientist at the International Institute for Sustainable Development based in Winnipeg, Manitoba presented an overview of sustainable development and environmental challenges around the world. The various sessions featured presenters from various Caribbean nations, including Dr. Kathryn Monk, a biologist who presides over the Iwokrama International Centre in Guyana. Mr. Crittenden’s presentation discussed the role of the media and key principles that environmental journalists should consider. Other presenters included Frances Cairncross, senior editor at The Economist, and Hamish McRae, associate editor of The Independent Newspaper. In a recent report prepared by R.W. Beck Inc., the U.S. National Recycling Coalition (NRC) concludes that recycling contributes 2.7 per cent of the U.S. gross domestic product. According to the NRC, recycling generates $236-billion in revenue annually and employs approximately 1.1 million people in 56,000 recycling and reuse companies.
