On March 22, 2001 New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani presided over the closing of the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, the world’s largest landfill. The city recently signed a three-year contract with Waste Management Inc. to ship its waste to Pennsylvania and Virginia. (See “Final Analysis” in the April/May 2000 edition.)
