U.S.-based FedEx Ground Package System has been ordered to pay $1.75 million to settle a lawsuit that identified the improper transport and storage of hazardous waste moved between 36 FedEx facilities before June 1, 2013.
The judgment is the culmination of a civil lawsuit filed July 1, 2014, in Sacramento County, Calif.
About $10,000 of the fine will be used by FedEx to inform its customers of waste minimization techniques and improved packaging.
“FedEx Ground maintains its long-standing commitment to ensure the safe transport of packages containing hazardous materials across its entire network,” an official for FedEx Ground said in a statement. “For several years we have made every effort to work cooperatively with California regulatory authorities, and we are pleased that we were able to resolve this dispute amicably.”
