On May 4, at the Recycling Council of Ontario’s 25th annual conference in Etobicoke, the audience was treated to a keynote presentation by renowned Professor Thomas Lindhqvist, known to some as the “Father of EPR” (a term he coined). Professor Lindhqvist is an associate professor at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University in Sweden. He presented an evaluative tool for use in quantifying the degree to which EPR principles, elements and factors are addressed within the design and operation of product stewardship in Ontario and other jurisdictions.
In the first plenary session following the keynote, Dr. Lindhqvist applied his tool to various Canadian EPR programs and made suggestions as to why some received poor grades.
