Dufferin County has reported the results of a six-month composting pilot project involving more than 2,000 households in Grand Valley, Shelburne and Orangeville, Ontario. By July 2000, the project efforts resulted in the collection of 400,000 kilograms of organic materials that would have otherwise been landfilled. As a result of its success, the project was extended to December 26, 2000. During the pilot residents placed transparent green bags at curbside that were provided free of charge by the Clorox Company of Canada. The materials were diverted to the Guelph Wet/Dry Recycling Facility. (For more information on this pilot project, see “Composting Matters in the February/March edition.)
