Nineteen businesses and individuals were convicted for environmental violations in the Province of Quebec during September 2000. Fines totaled $42,500; those more than $2,000 represented $27,460 of the total and were levied against four companies and one individual. Thirteen of the 19 cases were heard in provincial court, while those charged in the remaining six filed guilty please. Ten cases involved violations of the provincial Environmental Quality Act, four related to hazardous or solid waste regulations and three related to Quebec’s atmospheric quality regulations.
