On August 18, Eva Ligeti, Ontario’s environmental commissioner, was unexpectedly released from her position. According to media reports the decision was made by Cabinet and not by the province’s environment minister. During her 5-year tenure, Ligeti issued four annual and two special reports. For the past three years, the annual reports have been critical of the pace and extent of changes initiated by the government, which, according to Ligeti, diminished the government’s capacity to protect the environment. Opposition MPPs said the dismissal is illegal because such an action requires an all-party vote. Ivy Wile is interim commissioner and a new commissioner will be appointed in the fall.
