Green Lane Environmental, in Lambeth, Ontario and its owner, Robert McCaig, have been charged by the provincial environment ministry with four violations of the Environmental Protection Act. Charges include failure to report the correct amount of waste dumped at the company’s landfill site, providing false information, and reporting incorrect information in the company’s annual report. Ministry investigator Mike Bird says the amount of unreported exceeds 300,000 tonnes, and that the violations occurred from October 1995 to June of this year. McCaig states that the company did not knowingly breach the law, and says that, normally, contaminated soil utilized as interim cover material is not included in waste totals. The case will examine the interpretation of the definition of “waste.”
