Effective October 1, drink boxes, flexible plastic pouches and gable tops are mandated materials for British Columbia’s deposit-refund program. Last October, industry was given a one-year extension from the expanded deposit-refund system after convincing the government that sufficient processing capacity was not available to handle the additional feedstock. The B.C. Polycoat Container Management Committee was established to find a solution. The containers are now accepted at all regular collection locations (including retail outlets or Encorp return depots). Five-cent deposits are placed on containers one litre or less in size and 20 cent deposits on lager containers. The beverage container deposit-refund program now includes all ready-to-drink beverages except milk and milk substitutes.
