On October 27, the Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) brought together a broad range of organizations to identify strategies for post-consumer plastics management and the Recycled Content Regulation initiative proposed by the Society Promoting Environmental Preservation (SPEC). Attendees included: Ron Driedger of the B.C. Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks; Andrew Green of Environment Canada; Doug Flood of the Environment and Plastics Industry Council; Damian Bassett of CSR: Corporations Supporting Recycling; and, Malcolm Harvey of Encorp Pacific (Canada). Key conclusions were that an inventory of the quantity and types of post-consumer plastic packaging discards in the province and in Canada is needed and that an assessment of market development tools, including recycled content regulations and voluntary and mandatory stewardship, is also needed in order to develop long-term solutions. The recommendations were forwarded to B.C. Environment Minister Joan Sawicki.
