The editor and publisher of Solid Waste & Recycling magazine wish to apologize to their readers and provide clarification regarding an article titled “In the Bag — Plastic bags a better environmental alternative?” published in the August/September, 2008 edition of the magazine.

The article referred to above was attributed to one Ned Nettirc, who was described as a “waste diversion expert in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.” The editor of the magazine wishes to acknowledge that Mr. Nettric does not exist and that the article was in fact written by him. The editor and publisher acknowledge that the use of a pseudonym was, in the circumstances, inappropriate and apologizes for use of this pseudonym. The publisher acknowledges the inappropriateness of its paid staff utilizing pseudonyms for the purposes of publishing articles in the magazine.

The editor and publisher acknowledge that the contents of the article were drawn exclusively from materials published by the Environment and Plastics Industry Council (EPIC) and that presenting the article under a pseudonym was misleading.
