City of Halifax solid waste manager Gord Helm is leaving after five years, opening up the top spot in the midst of a municipal waste system overhaul.
Halifax has been considering exporting its commercial waste outside of the municipality. It has also generated some controversy over a proposal to require clear garbage bags at the curb, and the future of the Otter Lake landfill.
For several months, Halifax has also been in need of a new director of transportation and public works, though an interim director has been filling in.
City officials say it could take several months to fill the positions, but hope the search won’t delay the ongoing waste transition.
Helm didn’t specify why he left the position.
