Greg Sones has left as director of Ontario’s Waste Management Policy Branch at the Ministry of the Environment, after three years in the role.
As of June 2, 2014, Sones moves on to become Director of the Sector Compliance Branch, Operations Division, the policy branch confirmed. Wendy Ren will take on the role of Acting Director, Waste Management Policy Branch. Since 2013, she has been the branch’s Assistant Director.
Sones’s legacy at the Waste Management Policy Branch is notable for creating cost recovery initiatives to ensure the financial sustainability of Ontario’s waste diversion programs; introducing a new regulation to address the end-of-life management of consumer waste pharmaceuticals and sharps; working with Central Region, Waste Diversion Ontario and Ontario Tire Stewardship; addressing the successful clean-up of used tire legacy sites.
Other achievements by Sones include: approval for regulatory changes that have enabled implementation of the new compost framework; changes that reduced the regulatory burden on the vehicle manufacturing sector; a comprehensive review of industrial, commercial and institutional regulations; and the introduction of Bill 91, the Waste Reduction Act and draft Waste Reduction Strategy, including extensive stakeholder consultations.
