Oh, rats! Daycare closes doors over compost debacle

YMCA officials in Vancouver were scrambling last week to deal with compost-eating rats at a daycare playground.

According to a report from the National Post, the rats were taking advantage of the private garden compost located just beyond the fenced playground.

Officials closed down the daycare temporarily until the problem could be addressed.

According to the Beach YMCA Child Care, most of the compost has been transported off-site in recent days by the city’s waste services department.

As part of a push to divert organic waste from local landfills by 2015, Vancouver began requiring residents to deposit all food waste in municipal green bins picked up weekly in May 2013.
