Saskatchewan adds antifreeze to recyclables list

Saskatchewan has added antifreeze to the list of recyclable petroleum products managed by the Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp.

Saskatchewan has added antifreeze to the list of recyclable petroleum products managed by the Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp.

Demonstrating the province’s new recycling initiative on March 27, 2014, Saskatchewan Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff poured the first container of used antifreeze into a 205-litre drum at Crown Shred & Recycling in Regina.

The product’s containers will also be recycled.

“Used antifreeze is toxic,” Cheveldayoff told the press conference. “Dumping it can cause serious water quality problems and harm people, pets and wildlife.”

Cheveldayoff pointed out that more than two million litres of used antifreeze are generated each year in Saskatchewan. Under the province’s recovery program, the toxic liquid will be recycled for reuse. The antifreeze can be dropped off at one of 35 EcoCentres located throughout the province.

“And we will be expanding the number of collection points over the months to make it easier for farmers, small businesses and do-it-yourselfers to recycle,” noted Phil Wrubleski, executive director of the Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp., who also addressed reporters.

The recycling program, effective April 1, 2014, will have the Association’s 180 members add an Environmental Handling Charge as a user-pay levy, similar to the one for new petroleum products,

The Association currently operates the provincially-approved, industry-led stewardship recycling program for used oil, used oil filters and used plastic oil containers up to 50 litres.
