Quebec’s provincial government has set a new compensation level for Blue Box stewards, and made them responsible for managing half the cost of non-program materials that end up in the Blue Box.

Quebec’s provincial government has set a new compensation level for Blue Box stewards, and made them responsible for managing half the cost of non-program materials that end up in the Blue Box.

Effective December 28, 2013, the amendments fall under Quebec’s Environment Quality Act and the Compensation for Municipal Services Provided to Recover and Reclaim Residual Materials Amendment Regulation.

The new compensation formula for municipalities is based on the following allocation of costs: 69.1 per cent for containers and packaging; 20.5 per cent for printed matter; and 10.4 per cent for newspapers, according to the Gazette officielle du Québec.

The deadline for compensation payments is June 30, 2014.
