Waste to Energy Canada, Inc (WTEC), a provider of integrated environmental and socioeconomic solutions around the globe, recently announced that it is the successful proponent in a tender to supply a solid waste management system to the remote fly-in community of Old Crow, Yukon.

"WTEC is about providing real, affordable solutions to waste and energy problems and doing that in Old Crow where protecting the environment is critical is a real win for us and the people of Old Crow," says WTEC CEO Rod Taylor. "We are a Canadian company, and our technology withstands the harshest environments while still maintaining the highest standard of environmental performance, and the Old Crow plant will certainly demonstrate this even further."

The community of Old Crow is located in northern Yukon at the confluence of the Porcupine and Crow Rivers (approximately 1,000 kilometres north of Whitehorse).

The only consistent means of access is by aircraft.

The daily mean temperature in this arctic region reaches above freezing for only five months of the year.

The tender required the proponent to provide proven Oxidation Gasifier technology that could handle a large spectrum of waste streams and WTEC's latest technology, the Mobile Gasification System (MGS), was the right fit.

Up against bids from across North America, WTEC was chosen for its technical merit and its overall value. The pre-configured and pre-tested MGS is permanently housed in two customized 40' shipping containers.

The "plug and play" design is completely stand alone, allowing the system to be set up and operational within hours with minimal assembly required.

The MGS is expected to arrive in Old Crow by April 2012 and be operational almost immediately. It will be transported to the community via C130 Hercules aircraft.
