Waste Management has been added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI), ranking on the DJSI World and North America indexes as the top waste and disposal services company.

The U.S.-based company has also been ranked among the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) top 10 per cent of industrial companies for its efforts to reduce emissions and mitigate the risks of climate change.

“Having our commitment and our work in this area recognized by both the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the Carbon Disclosure Project is an appreciated acknowledgement of our efforts to be the leading environmental solutions provider in the industry,” said David Steiner, chief executive officer and president of Waste Management, in a statement to media.

Waste Management has made strides in its environmental sustainability performance with the establishment of 10-year goals in 2010 for recycling, renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and land conservation. The company’s progress against these commitments can be found on http://www.wm.com/sustainability/index.jsp

The DJSI is comprised of companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics, including economic, environmental and social criteria such as corporate governance, risk management, energy efficiency and occupational health and safety. It launched in 1999.

The CDP, an international, not-for-profit organization, represents 655 institutional investors with $78 trillion in assets and its indices highlight companies that have displayed a strong approach to information disclosure regarding climate change.
