Having served the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) in the roles of secretary, treasurer, and vice-president, Brian Tippets has announced that he will become the association’s international president as of summer 2014.

Tippetts said the transition will occur at the WASTECON event in Dallas during August 2014.

“SWANA has seven technical divisions with related sustainability programming, including recycling, special waste, composting, integrated solid waste management and collection,” said Tippetts in a February 11, 2014 statement to media. “On balance, SWANA has more tools to manage waste as a resource than managing it as a ‘waste’. SWANA certainly knows about all things landfill, but our future moves away from that management option,” he added.

For most of the last four years, Tippetts has conducted business development for Applied Ecological Services (AES), whose mission is “bringing the science of ecology to all land use decisions,” including landfills, brownfields and mines. More recently, Tippetts has become a freelance consultant seeking opportunities while working on a limited basis for AES.

Before working for AES, Tippetts was the executive director of a regional integrated solid waste program involved with landfills, landfill gas-to-energy, waste-to-energy, household hazardous waste, composting and sustainability. Additionally, Tippetts has been involved with collection, recycling, land remediation and anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge.

SWANA has 8,200 members throughout Canada, the U.S., and the Caribbean.
