Sims Metal Management welcomed New York City officials for the opening of the new Sunset Park Material Recovery Centre, driven by the powerful Bollegraaf system.

On December 12, 2013, Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway and other city officials helped out with the ribbon cutting for the new Brooklyn-based facility, designed to sort all curbside residential plastics, metal, aluminum, and glass collected from all five NYC boroughs.

The Bollegraaf system is capable of processing 1,000 tons per day of bottles and cans and features 16 TITECH optical sorters. The optical sorters are TITECH’s newest autosort 4 models, introduced in 2013, which eliminate the lamps used on the autosort 3 models and introduce FLYING BEAM technology. They will identify and sort 10 different marketable products for the city.

The facility will generate revenue for the city and assist in reaching the Mayor’s goal of diverting 30 per cent of the city’s waste from landfills. A percentage of the recyclables will be delivered by barge to reduce truck traffic on the city streets. All material is debagged and the plastic film and paper is taken out with ballistic separators and separated by 5 TITECH optical sorters into clean end products.

The system has been featured on multiple news outlets, including CBS and NPR. VAN DYK Recycling Solutions’ technician Anno Cazemier and project manager David Lukas will appear in an hourly television special for National Geographic.

In 2006, Sims Municipal Recycling bought a Bollegraaf system with TITECH optical sorters to test the automated ability of the optical sorters on the very dirty incoming material in their Jersey City facility. The test facility has processed half the city tonnage for the last 7 years. SMR signed a 20 year contract in 2010 with New York City to process the comingled curbside material. All plastics are now accepted in the material.
