Family-owned furniture manufacturer, Calstone Inc., has won an Earth Day Canada award for its sustainable remanufacturing program.
Established in 1985, Scarborough, Ontario-based Calstone commits to keeping all of its furniture out of landfills, ensuring that all components are reused or recycled.
“To be recognized by such an esteemed Canadian charity as Earth Day Canada inspires Calstone to continue to strive to reach new sustainable solutions that ensure our company manufactures with the smallest environmental footprint inspiring others along the way,” says Cindy Cohanim, Calstone’s business development manager.
Earth Day Canada’s Small Business Award winner, with support from the RBC Foundation and Mill Street Brewery, received a $5,000 cash-prize that must be used to make an operational change that lessens the company’s environmental impact. The Hometown Heroes Awards also gives permission to use the award and the EDC logo for one year to help market and promote the business and/or an approved product.
Calstone was presented its award at Earth Day Canada’s Gala on June 11, 2014, in Toronto.
“Calstone is a shining example of how a small business can integrate environmentally responsible practices into its operations,” says Deb Doncaster, president of EDC. “From water and energy conservation in the production facility, to waste reduction at the end of a product’s life cycle, Calstone has made thoughtful choices every step of the way.”
