The public will have an opportunity this Friday to see how recyclables are processed at the new materials recovery facility near The Plains. An open house will be held from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, the recycling center on Route 13 near Chauncey is now being used as a Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials.
Both facilities are operated by the nonprofit Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers Inc.
Executive Director Bruce Underwood said the reason for the open house is to give the public and local officials an opportunity to see how recyclables are processed now that the switch has been made to single-stream recycling. Previously, people who were recycling had to separate the different types of recyclables for collection, but now sorting is not required and items are separated at the materials recovery facility.
