The Recycling Council of Ontario has extended its deadline until August 15, 2014, so that additional office and retail properties across Canada can take part in a major study that aims to analyze collection and recycling rates.

The voluntary, anonymous survey for the National Solid Waste Benchmarking Study on annual waste generation and diversion data is collected to calculate performance by building type.

The National Solid Waste Benchmarking Study is designed for organizations that own or manage buildings in Canada, and aims to collect data and inform office and retail businesses about their waste diversion and reduction performance.

Through specialized voluntary anonymous surveys, annual waste generation and diversion data is collected to calculate performance by building type. The final results will be published in fall 2014.

Complete the Survey here

Up to 20 per cent of survey responses will be verified through bills and/or audit documents. That information will remain private under a signed confidentiality agreement.

Only the waste performance information (total generated and diverted for 2013 and/or 2013 audit results) will be verified.

The verification process includes checking the submitted data against supporting documentation.

Who Can Take Part?

  • Office buildings across the country
  • Retail centres: enclosed shopping centres, retail plazas
  • Retail stores: big box, standalone

The data will correlate performance and management practices, set benchmarks, and inform best practices. Results will be published as aggregated data along with detailed analysis, conclusions, and recommendations. Companies will then have a framework to measure waste performance and compare a building's performance against industry peers.
