To promote carbon footprint reduction in the restaurant and food service industries, the U.S. Composting Council has dedicated a week in May to highlight the importance of reducing waste and composting into renewable resources.

International Composting Awareness Week will be taking place across the U.S. from May 6 to 12, 2012.

This community-based awareness program is a call to action for companies, especially restaurants, to take steps to reduce environmental harm:

-Each year, a single restaurant can dispose of more than 50 tonnes of organic waste on its own.

-The American population tosses out enough paper bags, plastic cups, forks, and spoons every year to circle the earth’s equator over 300 times.

-Single-use food service packaging items make up 1.3 per cent of all materials discarded in the municipal solid waste stream.
