The number of abandoned mattresses in Vancouver’s streets has increased by nearly three-fold in the past 10 years – a trend that has the city considering a mattress pick-up program.
The city of Vancouver says the problem started after 2011, when Metro Vancouver put a $20 charge on mattresses dumped at the landfill. People started dumping old mattresses in public spaces to avoid the recycling fee, said Albert Shamess, director of waste management at the City of Vancouver.
“People don’t want to pay to dispose of it properly. It’s cutting corners,” he said.
