Landfill gas-to-energy plants are cropping up more and more in smaller rural areas, such as a new facility in Moose Creek, Ontario, a tiny community about 60 kilometres east of the nation’s capital.
The new 4.2 megawatt facility is located at Moose Creek’s Laflèche Environmental Inc. facility. It is a joint project between Energy Ottawa (part of Hydro Ottawa) and Integrated Gas Recovery Services Inc.
“This partnership is a win-win scenario,” said Bryce Conrad, President and CEO of Hydro Ottawa in a June 7, 2013 statement to media. “We’re turning a negative into a positive by harnessing landfill gas as a green energy source to power homes and businesses, while diverting greenhouse gas emissions in the process.”
The new facility at Moose Creek will generate enough green electricity to power 4,000 homes and divert more than 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.
Hydro Ottawa’s subsidiary, Energy Ottawa Inc., is the largest municipally-owned producer of green power in Ontario. Its renewable energy facilities include six hydroelectric stations at Chaudière Falls and landfill gas-to-energy plants at the Trail Road and Laflèche Landfills. Together these facilities help to reduce greenhouse gases by almost 300,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year.
