Lévis, Quebec is set to receive $71,000 in federal funding to support local action to reduce pollution and improve air quality through the EcoAction Community Funding Program.

In a January 23, 2013 announcement, Environment Canada stated that the project seeks to reduce local greenhouse gases by 10,000 tonnes by raising awareness and promoting changes in the behaviour of 70 school classes, 2,500 families and businesses in the city of Lévis.

The government news release said the new project aims to create a positive yet competitive spirit by pitting school against school and business against business to gauge reduction progress on transportation, consumption, packaging and increases in recycling.

“The EcoAction community funding program is a concrete example of how the Government of Canada is helping communities and their citizens enjoy cleaner air, water and land,” announced Lévis MP Steven Blaney on behalf of Environment Canada.

“This project will help to raise awareness amongst youth in Lévis on environmental issues such as the importance of greenhouse gas emission reductions,” Blaney added. “We are supporting projects like these because we believe they will make a difference.”

The EcoAction Community Funding Program supports projects that rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment. It also builds the capacity of communities and individuals to ensure future protection. In 2013, the federal government is providing more than $4 million for some 100 new projects under the program.
