Covanta Energy is initiating a $30.1 million expansion of its Niagara Falls waste-to-energy plant following approvals from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.
Covanta officials say the expansion includes a third boiler and the installation of a new steam pipeline
The expansion plans also include the addition of a new rail transfer facility and a waste handling centre to capitalize on Covanta’s new push into enhanced metals recovery.
The project is expected to create more than 20 permanent jobs and up to 160 construction jobs.
According to Covanta, the facility processes 2,250 tonnes of waste per day, selling the steam to adjacent chemical facilities and the electricity to the New York State power grid.
