Oxford County council is cuing up to comment on Bill 151, the Waste-Free Ontario Act, legislation that Warden David Mayberry said is "heading in the right direction."
Set into motion last year, the legislation aims to help reduce the amount of waste being generated while repealing and replacing the 2002 Waste Diversion Act with the updated Waste Diversion Transition Act.
The proposed bill puts more responsibility on producers, who will be financially and physically responsible to recover their own material. Municipalities will also be considered "service providers" under the new legislation to help producers fulfill their obligations.
Mayberry said he thinks most municipalities agree with the general direction of wanting to reduce dependency on landfills while being more careful and efficient with resources, but he added there are still things that could be changed.
