California-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has announced natural gas agreements with a number of companies in the industries of trucking, transit and waste collection.

For trucking use, Clean Energy Fuels is designing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) station for The Kroger Co, as the grocery retailer looks to switch over some 40 diesel trucks to LNG in Oregon. Another grocer, Cardenas Markets, has signed a deal with Clean Energy Fuels for 16 new heavy-duty compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks with the goal of converting its entire 50-truck fleet over the next several years.

"Our customers are like family. Using a cleaner fuel like natural gas improves the air our customers breathe and helps keep costs low. By partnering with Clean Energy we can continue providing our customers with the value and quality they have come to expect from Cardenas Markets," Raul Chavez, manager of special projects at Cardenas Markets, said in a statement.

Clean Energy Fuels is also working with courier service UPS as the company aims to retain one of the biggest LNG and CNG fleets in the US. Fifteen new trucks will be added under the new agreement.

On the transit front, Clean Energy Fuels is working with the Anaheim Transportation Network to design a mobile LNG fuelling station supported by multi-year operations, maintenance and an LNG fuelling contract. The fleet of 35 LNG buses serves the Anaheim Resort District.

Other transit deals:

  • Garden City Sanitation (GCS) San José, Calif., is converting its fleet of nearly 50 automated garbage collection vehicles to run on CNG. Currently 23 CNG refuse trucks are in service and the entire fleet is expected to be converted by mid-2015.
  • Since earning its initial six-year collection contract with the City of San José in 2007, GCS has been awarded an eight-year extension. Operating natural gas vehicles has helped GCS comply with increasing emissions standards and the City of San José’s Green and Green Fleet Policy.
  • Clean Energy is constructing its fourth time-fill CNG station for Garden City Sanitation and its partners Alameda County Industries, Mission Trail Waste Systems and Livermore Sanitation Inc.
  • Once fully-deployed, the fleet is forecasted to consume approximately 366,600 DGEs of CNG annually. This would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 580 metric tons annually, the equivalent of removing approximately 175 passenger cars.

Clean Energy is a juggernaut that I've been serial investing in for 6 years now. It's easy to have patience with its volatility when you have the vision to see it's imminent success. The burgeoning Natural Gas industrial revolution (especially in transportation),is a world changer poised to break loose. May the political obstacles disappear along with the politicians who selfishly impede the progress. I'd like to see T. Boone Pickens & Clean Energy start mainstream advertising to educate the public more & accelerate the revolution.
