MPs returning to the Commons September 19 are being asked to pass a private bill observing food waste awareness. Some $27 billion worth of food is pointlessly spoiled each year, according to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.
“Reducing food waste generates economic, social and environmental benefits,” said MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau (Berthier-Maskinongé, Que.), New Democrat agriculture critic. “The food recovered could feed thousands of families.”
Brosseau’s Bill C-231 An Act To Establish National Food Waste Awareness Day would mark the observance each October 16, and compel cabinet to convene a conference of provincial agriculture ministers to “develop a national strategy” on curbing waste. read more >>
