Some condo owners use food grinders to avoid food scraps fines.
Burnaby City Hall’s been working to get those who live in apartments and condos to start recycling organics — a group that has traditionally been slower to go along with using green bins.
In 2014, Burnaby residents living in multi-family homes served by the city garbage trucks threw out 16,707 tonnes of garbage compared to 654 tonnes of organics, according to the city’s figures.
That year, only 173 of about 580 multi-family complexes served by the city even had any organics sorting.
And even in 2015, following the introduction of the Metro Vancouver organics waste ban from garbage bags, 149 apartment complexes have yet to begin sorting their organics, the city’s numbers show.
