Be careful when you put your recycling bin out at the road. You just might get graded on what’s inside. Just like grade school, outstanding recyclers in the CVRD will get a gold star on their waste bins as a thank you, while others get an Oops sticker.
It’s all part of the new Recycling 2.0 campaign launched by the CVRD as a way to remind people of the right way to recycle. Cowichan Valley citizens have the highest diversion rate – over 70 per cent – on the Island, meaning they recycle rather than just dump things in the garbage. But in our zeal to recycle as much as we can, we are also the worst offenders, contaminating recycling so that much of it goes to the landfill.
