Can your waste help pay your energy bills? If recent innovation becomes common, our garbage may do just that.
Canadians are among the largest producers of solid waste in the world. According to Environment Canada, we generate 990 kilograms per capita annually compared to the Japanese, for example, who produce half that much. We simply consume a lot, and what we buy — whether it’s food, household goods, or personal products — is well-wrapped.
It’s no wonder, then, that fully 33 per cent of our total waste comes from residences, whereas only 30 per cent comes from construction sites, 22 per cent from commercial outfits, and 15 per cent from industrial production.
