The city's water and waste department requested city hall not allow the same company to perform garbage and recycling pick-up in Winnipeg's two collection areas once new contracts are inked in 2017. Elisha Dacey / For Metro
When Winnipeg residents’ roll-out their garbage carts to the curb next fall it likely won’t be to a collector who has a monopoly over waste pick-up in the city.
Recently, the city’s water and waste department consolidated the city’s four garbage and recycling collection areas into two zones, on the east and west side of the Red River.
The reconfiguration was a part of the city’s planning to to issue new collection contracts after its current ones with Emterra Environmental and Progressive Waste Solutions expire in September 2017.
